Energy Audits for Data Centers
According to the
Energy Efficiency Directive (EED 2023/1791), energy audits are mandatory for
large energy consumers—companies with annual primary energy consumption exceeding
10 TJ (2.78 GWh). For data centers specifically, these audits must be conducted
in accordance with the EN 50600 standard, which applies to all facilities
exceeding the aforementioned annual consumption threshold.
With over 30
years of experience, ENEL PS has developed deep expertise in energy performance
assessment—including the specific technical and operational requirements of
data center infrastructure. Drawing on this knowledge, we are fully capable of
conducting energy audits in accordance with EN 50600.
Energy audits
are an important step toward the systematic improvement of energy
efficiency (EE) in data centers. Under the EED, energy audits must
be completed by 2026.
We would like to
take this opportunity to invite all data centers to undergo an energy audit,
regardless of their annual energy consumption. An energy audit is not a
one-time exercise—it is repeated periodically when new energy efficiency
measures need to be identified, including projected savings from the
implementation of energy efficiency measures, required investment, and expected payback
periods.
In addition to
being a legal requirement, energy audits provide a clear overview of current
energy consumption, identify opportunities for energy savings and CO₂ reduction,
and lay a solid foundation for the implementation of an ISO 50001 energy
management system.
Starting in 2027,
energy management systems must be implemented for large consumers with
annual energy consumption exceeding 85 TJ (23.6 GWh).
