Stainless Steel for Liquid Cooling: Material Selection for Long-Term Reliability
As data center power density increases, direct-to-chip and immersion cooling systems must handle higher thermal loads while minimizing the risk of failure and shutdown. Reliability depends on every component of the cooling infrastructure, including the materials that carry and exchange the coolant.
Stainless steel provides corrosion resistance, cleanliness, mechanical strength, and very low maintenance requirements for fluid distribution piping and CDU heat exchangers. With partners such as the Fischer Group for piping, these properties result in robust solutions designed for long-term reliability.
The same requirements apply to infrastructure subjected to increasing loads, such as cable trays, where stainless steel enables lightweight solutions that combine mechanical strength and corrosion resistance.
European stainless steel also helps reduce embodied carbon. A fully electric furnace process combined with very high levels of recycled scrap results in a low carbon footprint, leading to an attractive cost per metric ton of CO₂ avoided during the construction phase.
