Stainless Steel for Liquid Cooling: Material Choice for Long-Term Reliability

As data center power density increases, direct-to-chip and immersion cooling systems must handle higher thermal loads while minimising failure and shutdown risks. Reliability depends on every part of the cooling infrastructure, including the materials carrying and exchanging the coolant.

Stainless steel brings corrosion resistance, cleanliness, mechanical strength and very low maintenance requirements to fluid distribution piping and CDU heat exchangers. With partners such as Fischer Group for piping, these properties translate into robust solutions designed for long-term reliability.

The same requirements extend to infrastructure exposed to increasing loads, such as cable trays, where stainless steel enables lightweight solutions combining mechanical strength and corrosion resistance.

European stainless steel also contributes to lower embodied carbon. A fully electric furnace route combined with very high levels of recycled scrap enables a low carbon footprint, creating an attractive cost per tonne of CO₂ avoided at construction stage.
